La malattia, quando non aveva esiti letali, causava sofferenze e disabilità e gravava a lungo su famiglie e sistemi sanitari. All’azione del Rotary si sono affiancate altre Organizzazioni, tra le quali l’OMS, l’Unicef, la Fondazione Melinda e Bill Gates. Da allora nel mondo sono stati vaccinati 2,5 miliardi di bambini e il Rotary ha contribuito con oltre 1,5 miliardi di dollari e innumerevoli ore di volontariato dei propri soci impegnati sul campo per le vaccinazioni.
E’ stato così possibile salvare centinaia di migliaia di vite ed evitare ad altri milioni una vita infelice di disabilità. Dall’inizio della campagna la situazione è costantemente migliorata. Oggi tutti i paesi del mondo sono polio-free, tranne due, il Pakistan e l’Afghanistan, dove la situazione geopolitica rende difficile realizzare un’adeguata campagna vaccinale e si registrano ancora pochissimi casi. Occorre un ultimo sforzo, quello definitivo per eradicare completamente la malattia.
La lotta alla malattia è stata resa possibile dalle ricerche di un eminente scienziato rotariano: Albert Sabin.
